What to know about the 2022 Kentucky Derby horse

Mo Donegal broke his maiden at Belmont last October and closed his 2-year-old campaign with a nose victory over Zandon in the Grade 2 Remsen on Dec. 4 at Aqueduct. He opened his 2022 season with a third-place finish in the Grade 3 Holy Bull on Feb. 5 at Gulfstream Park before the Wood Memorial score. … Joel Rosario rode Mo Donegal in the Wood victory but is expected to have the mount on Epicenter in the Kentucky Derby…

Todd Pletcher on Mo Donegal

Pletcher said Mo Donegal resembles his sire, Uncle Mo. “Uncle Mo stamps his offspring probably more so than any stallion in the country,” Pletcher said. “(Mo Donegal) looks like a lot of them do. He’s got the same build. He’s a good-sized colt.

You need a good trip in the Derby, and with his running style he’s going to have to work his way through some traffic,” Pletcher said after the Wood. “But I think he’s got some good experience, and he showed today he can overcome a bit of a trip and zigzag when he needs to. Most importantly, it looks like he has the stamina to see out the trip.”
