Breeders’ Cup Watch: World’s Fastest Turf Sprinter, Cogburn

Hall of Fame horseman Steve Asmussen discusses his superstar turf sprinter, Cogburn. This is a horse who ran sub 1.01 for five and a half furlongs on the grass! So that was Cogburn in winning the Grade 1 Jaipur in 59.80 seconds set is believed to be the fastest time ever for 5 1/2 furlongs.

“We are unbelievably fortunate to have him.”

Asmussen prefers his horses to run fast when they race, not for a routine workout.  Cogburn is shown working an easy half-mile in 49.80 Monday right after the Churchill Downs track opened for training at 5:30 a.m.

Cogburn last raced in easily winning Kentucky Downs’ $2 million, Grade 2 Ainsworth Turf Sprint on Sept. 7. He is training exceptionally well up to the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Del Mar Nov. 2.
