Breeders’ Cup Watch: Asmussen, Bauer Interviews

The Race Must Go On! Just Not NowHall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen likes his horses to run fast when they race, not for a routine workout. So that was Cogburn – who in winning the Grade 1 Jaipur in 59.80 seconds set is believed to be the fastest time ever for 5 1/2 furlongs — working an easy half-mile in 49.80 Monday right after the Churchill Downs track opened for training at 5:30 a.m. Cogburn last raced in easily winning Kentucky Downs’ $2 million, Grade 2 Ainsworth Turf Sprint on Sept. 7.

He is training up to the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Del Mar Nov. 2. Video starts out with b-roll of Cogburn, including heading into and galloping out of his work, followed by a conversation with Asmussen.

Conversation with trainer Phil Bauer Monday morning at Churchill Downs, shortly before Rigney Racing’s colt Jonathan’s Way went to the track, jogging a mile and then galloping a mile. Video begins with b-roll of training, followed by Bauer interview. Bauer and owner Richard Rigney will have two rooting interests in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, with Rigney having also bred Saturday’s 3-for-3 Champagne winner Chancer McPatrick, the now two-time Grade 1 winner trained by Chad Brown. Bauer trained Chancer McPatrick’s dam, Bernadreamy, who could only win a maiden race in nine starts but who is a daughter of Dream Empress, winner of Keeneland’s Grade 1 Darley Alcibiades.
