Travers Day Full-card Analysis by Rich Nilsen

with Wagering Strategies & Spot Plays by Rich Nilsen

Past Results:  Nilsen selected the winner of the 2022 Travers, Epicenter, but missed the exacta.  He gave out two spot plays, the second one Wicked Groove won the finale.  He paid a whopping $18.20 win and keyed a winning $98.00 exacta!  Nilsen put his first sheet since the 2023 Derby with the Whitney Stakes and crushed the card, nailing 10-1 winner White Abarrio!  Read more about he came up with this selection over the big favorite Cody’s Wish.

On the 2021 Travers’ sheet analysis he had all 13 winners listed among his selections for each race.  In 2016 Nilsen crushed the Travers Day card, selecting Haveyougoneaway who upset the G1 Ballerina at odds of 10-1!   But Nilsen wasn’t done.  He followed up that score up by giving out top selection ARROGATE, track-record winner of the G1 Travers Stakes who paid an amazing $25.40 to win for followers of the sheet.  Another top pick ran 2nd at odds of 17-1 in race 3 on that day, returning a huge place payoff.

Two Jockey Suicides Bring Awareness to Mental Health Crisis in Horseracing

Sally Mixon, founder of Abijah’s on the Backside

Ashley Canchari prefers to remember her brother as he lived. One of the most popular jockeys at Canterbury Park, Alex Canchari brimmed with talent and charisma, a Shakopee kid who achieved his dream at his hometown track.

But that wasn’t why Ashley was invited to speak at Saratoga Race Course earlier this month. During a discussion about the mental health concerns faced by jockeys, she told a room full of people how Alex died: by suicide, on a bleak March night, not far from the track where he rode 334 winners.

“I wish every day he would have said something to me,” she said in an interview last week. “But he never showed us he needed help, that he was in a dark place.

“And that’s the thing. In the horse racing industry, these issues have never been discussed. They’ve been swept under the rug.”

Horse racing is all Nick Zito knows.

“Racing is different,” Zito said. “This game will humble kings.”

The hall-of-fame trainer started in the sport, as he jokes, when he still had black hair. Decades later, Zito has amassed 18 grade one stakes wins, including all three Triple Crown races.

“I’m very grateful to racing,” he said. “I’m very grateful to NYRA. I’m very grateful to all the racetracks around America.”

But after a legendary career as a trainer, Zito is ready for a change. With a new Saratoga racing season underway, he is moving over into… more on the new career for Nick Zito

Handicapping Tip of the Day #66 – 1 Turn Races vs. 2 Turn Races

by Rich Nilsen for Agameofskill.com

Some racehorses excel around two turns and a route of ground, whereas other runners are best suited to sprints or one-turn contests.  Sometimes this preference is simply due to a stamina issue.  Some horses don’t ‘corner’ well and can lose precious ground or momentum around the turns.  Other horses have issues with lead changes and that can affect their ability to perform at their best around two turns.

In this year’s G1 Whitney, one of the premier races of the Saratoga meeting, the heavy favorite was superstar Cody’s Wish. The five-year-old horse from the Bill Mott barn had won 9 of 13 races lifetime, including his last six in a row.  The 2022 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile champ had won both starts this year versus Grade 1 company by a combined eight lengths.

One of the victims in his start was one of his main rivals in the Whitney Stakes, White Abarrio.  At a cursory glance and without taking a deep dive, many in the public just assumed that Cody’s Wish would dominate that rival just like he did last time.  However, the circumstances were vastly different in their next meet-up.

The Whitney is a two-turn 1 1/8 miles races, a test of stamina in this era of racehorses.  With a powerful finish last out in the G1 Met Mile, and showing a plethora of ‘routes’ in his past performances, Cody’s Wish figured to handle the added ground without any problem.  Or would he?

In his 13 career races, Cody’s Wish had only competed around two turns on one occasion, and that came in the G3 Challenger Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs early last year.  The result was a neck loss to a horse that would hypothetically be 50-1 in the Whitney.  That was all I needed to see to flag Cody’s Wish as an overbet and vulnerable favorite.  The icing on the cake was that Cody’s Wish figured to be in the back of the pack with a modest pace up front, meaning his rivals would have first jump on him.

So, who could beat him would be the next question.  Historically, this was a pretty weak Whitney Stakes which added to the Cody’s Wish appeal and favoritism.  One horse leaped off the page to me and it was runner that I was interested in last time out in the Met Mile, Rick Dutrow’s White Abarrio.

Unlike the favorite, White Abarrio was a proven winner going two turns.  In fact, he was a 2022 Florida Derby winner at nine furlongs for former trainer Saffie Joseph.  Dutrow had recently taken over the care of this runner, and the Met Mile represented his first start with limited training of the Grade 1 winner.  In my view, Dutrow had not had time to fully bring out the best in White Abarrio.  That would not be the care heading into the Whitney as he had an additional two months with the four-year-old colt.

It was no secret that Dutrow, who had returned from his controversial 10-year ban, was one of racing’s greatest trainers at improving new acquisitions.  So, there was every reason to believe that White Abarrio would move forward of the first start going one turn at Belmont Park.  Below is my writeup on my top selection.

Sometimes in racing, it can be difficult for the horseplayer to overlook the hype of a superstar like Cody’s Wish.  There is no doubt he is one of the best and most exciting milers that we have seen in recent years, but that did not mean he had to win the two-turn Whitney Stakes.

Off at 45 cents on the dollar, Cody’s Wish flattened to be third, 10 lengths behind the winner White Abarrio.  Rick Dutrow returned to the winner’s circle in a Grade 1 with White Abarrio returning $22.40 to win!

When the handicapper can find a couple of solid reasons to go against a huge favorite, it opens the door to potentially a nice score.  In this case, the difference between one turn and two turns played a major role.

Industry Profile: Jockey Corey Nakatani Enters the Hall

It has been a long time in coming. After several years of falling short in the voting, Corey Nakatani finally got the call this year that he’s been voted into the racing’s Hall of Fame. The induction ceremonies are Friday at Saratoga Springs.

“I just think it’s amazing,” Nakatani says. “Where I started, the guys I learned to ride from, the guys I was competing against. As you know they’re all Hall of Famers. To do as well as I did, obviously you have to put in the three ‘D’s’; determination, desire and don’t take no for an answer.”

Nakatani was one of 10 children in his family growing up in Southern California. His father, Roy, was born during World War II in a Japanese internment camp at Santa Anita. Corey was a champion high school wrestler and, in a strange way, that led him to racing.

“When I was 15-years-old I broke my nose in a wrestling tournament and went to the hospital at Arcadia Methodist (across from Santa Anita racetrack),” Nakatani says. “After they fixed my nose, my dad went to Santa Anita and bet on the horses.”

While dad was playing the ponies, Nakatani wandered out on the track apron and started asking questions.

“I was like, ‘Do those guys make any money?’ and, (trainer) Jack Van Berg was standing nearby,” Nakatani says. “He said, ‘That guy right there is Bill Shoemaker and he’s standing with Charlie Whittingham. They both make about a million dollars a year.’ So that summer I went to the World Jockey Association and learned about horses. Then at the end of the summer I went to work at Tony Matos’ farm, a Thoroughbred breeding farm where they broke babies and stuff.”

Early History

Nakatani worked at the farm for about three months and then went to work at Galway Downs in Temecula for Bob and Cecil Hundley.

This may be a good time to note that Nakatani had never ridden a horse in his life. He was a quick learner and by 1988 he was picking up mounts. One of the first races he ever rode was at Del Mar. He went to Tijuana and rode his first winner that year and by the spring of 1989 Nakatani was riding at Santa Anita.

30-years later, Nakatani had won 3,909 races, 341 graded stakes, 120 Grade I’s and over $234 million in purse money, 12th best among riders at the time of his retirement. He notched 10 Breeders’ Cup wins and his most memorable was, of course, his first.

“I was on Itsallgreektome in New York,” Nakatani recalls. “I got beat by Lester Piggott. When I first started riding Laffitt Pincay was my idol. He, at the time, had the most Breeders’ Cup wins. That was my focus, winning stakes races and getting the young 2-year-olds to get better.”

Nakatani says he attributes his success to staying healthy and hard work.

“Working hard, getting on a lot of horses and helping the trainers put them in the right races,” Nakatani says. “It was an amazing ride, seems like it was just yesterday I was winning all of the major stakes races in California.”

Nakatani won three riding titles at Del Mar in 1994, 1998 and 2004. He ranks sixth all-time in wins at Del Mar with 705 and second in stakes victories with 108. He gives a lot of credit to his agents – Matos, Bob Meldahl and Nick Casado.

As for the best horse he ever rode…Lava Man is the first one he mentions.

“I used to ride a lot of nice horses,” Nakatani noted. “A lot of the time you’re riding against Hall of Famers so you don’t always get the best of the horses you want to ride. I was very fortunate and lucky to win a lot of races I shouldn’t have won.”

Nakatani’s racing career came to an abrupt end at Del Mar in 2018 when he was unseated during a race and suffered a broken neck. He announced his retirement in 2019.

“I had a lot of help along the way,” Nakatani says. “One trainer that comes to mind is Jenine Sahadi; people like that who had a lot of faith in me.”
