2016 Travers’s Day Recap:  Nilsen picks top selection Haveyougoneaway who upsets the G1 Ballerina at odds of 10-1!   Nilsen follows that score up by giving out top selection ARROGATE, track-record winner of the G1 Travers Stakes! Arrogate returned $25.40 to win for followers of the sheet.  Another top pick runs 2nd at odds of 17-1 in race 3 on August 27, 2016.

Testimonials:

“Great job, Rich!” ~ Jeff S.

“Rich: nice job Travers Day! Thanks to Arrogate, you gave me a good day. How in the world did you land on him? I suspect you’re doing some kind of voodoo pace analysis. If you ever decide to give lessons or a seminar, let me know.” ~ Kelley S.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Rich Nilsen caught the horse racing bug at a young age when his father took him to the racetracks in New York. He eventually attended the University of Louisville Equine Business Program with the goal of making a career in the horse racing industry.

Nilsen has worked the past 24 years in the equine industry, serving most of those years as the Marketing Director for Brisnet.com and TwinSpires.com, the Official Wagering Site of the Kentucky Derby.

During his long tenure at the Churchill Downs-owned properties, Nilsen managed the successful Players’ Pool syndicate, which pooled funds from the account wagering members to go after large Pick-6 carryovers. During Nilsen’s leadership, the Players’ Pool produced a significant profit for the members over the course of seven years. One of the best hits was when the Players’ Pool took down half of the Pick-6 pool on Kentucky Derby Day 2007, with a gross return of over $500,000.  The Pool had several other hits over $250,000.

The $2.8 Million National Handicapping Championship (NHC) is the premier horse racing tournament in the nation. It is basically horse racing’s version of the World Series of Poker, with the main difference being that players cannot buy their way into the NHC. Players can only win their way in via tournaments held throughout the country. Nilsen is one of the top participants in the history of the event, having qualified 13 times. He was the first player, and one of only two, to finish in the top 10 at the NHC twice.

Nilsen is now the founder and editor of AGameofSkill.com, a site devoted to horse racing education and promotion.

About the Sheet

In this brief but concise report, I provide selections for each and every Breeders’ Cup race for both days, as well as pace scenario analysis which is critical for predicting the outcomes of these events.

Spot Plays are my best bets and key wagering horses for the big weekend. Picking your spots is key to profiting on the races, especially when it comes to the Breeders’ Cup. The opportunities are plentiful but you improve your chances by selecting key spot plays and focusing most of your bets on those plays.

Set aside a budget for these two days and be sure to have plenty of ammunition for the bigger of the two days, Saturday. Best of luck!

Breeders Cup 2015 analysis2014 Recap:

Four of the five Spot Plays given out on the Breeders’ Cup Analysis by AGameofSkill founder Rich Nilsen won and won big.  The highlight was the top selection Work All Week, who upset the Breeders’ Cup Sprint to the tune of $40.20 and keyed the trifecta play given out on the sheet which paid a whopping $1,064.70 (for every $1 increment).

Nilsen’s first Spot Play of the day was Dayathespa, who cruised to an easy win in the Filly & Mare Turf and paid a generous $13.00 to Win and $6.60 to Place.

The next Spot Play was the recommended Win wager on Bobby’s Kitten in the Turf Sprint.  The cutback runner for trainer Chad Brown returned $16.40.

Next up from Nilsen was the $64.80 exacta with Main Sequence over Flintshire in the Breeders’ Cup Turf.

In the very next race WORK ALL WEEK took the Sprint, paying $40.20 and $18.40, hitting the big trifecta, and completing an $1,814.70 Pick-3 for those who used Nilsen’s top 3 selections.

SAMPLE ANALYSIS FROM THE 2014 REPORT

FILLY & MARE TURF ANALYSIS

PACE SCENARIO: Dayatthespa is the clear lone speed in this 1 1/4 mile race.  The daughter of City Zip stretches out off a 1 mile win at Keeneland and she will take this field as far as she can under crafty rider Javier Castellano.  She won a grade one easily at 9 furlongs, finishing the last 1/8th in a sizzling :11.2.  The euro invader offering the best value is Fiesolana.

Spot Play? Play # 4 Dayatthespa to Win and Place.

Selections:

1st- # 4 Dayatthespa (8/1)

2nd- # 6 Fiesolana (8/1)

3rd- # 3 Dank (5/2)

4th- #10 Stephanie’s Kitten (3/1)

SPRINT ANALYSIS

PACE SCENARIO: A fast pace is ensured in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint with Fast Anna and Work All Week the speed of the speed.  The older horse, Work All Week, will sit right off the flank off the sophomore colt to his inside before taking over.  Undefeated on fast dirt in 7 attempts, Work All Week doesn’t have to carry his racetrack with him and the win machine could be this good for Midwest Thoroughbreds.

Spot Play? Play #13 Work All Week to Win and Place. Play a trifecta partwheel #5, 13 with #5, 13 with ALL.  Trifecta partwheel #5, 13 with ALL with #5, 13.

Selections:

1st- #13 Work All Week (10/1)

2nd- # 5 Private Zone (6/1)

3rd- # 8 Palace (6/1)

4th- # 6 Rich Tapestry (5/1)

5th – #10 Big Macher (12/1)

Finishing 10th on the 2011 NHC Tour Leaderboard

Rich Nilsen, founder of AGameofSkill.com, finished the year in 10th place overall on the NTRA National Handicapping Championship (NHC) Tour leaderboard, based on 9,075 points. Designed to create added interest in handicapping tournaments throughout the year, the Tour is based on players’ best five finishes in contests. Tour membership costs $45/year from the NTRA, and this also gives players access to some free online tournaments during the course of the year.

Paul Shurman, an attorney from New York, accumulated over 13,000 points which earned him the title of the NHC Tour Champion. For his win Shurman earned the $75,000 grand prize. He is now eligible for a $2 million bonus as the Tour champ if he goes on to win the NHC at the end of the month.

“Winning the NHC Tour is certainly the highlight of my handicapping career,” said Shurman. “Many of the most respected handicappers in North America are Tour members and compete for the Tour championship.  It is very gratifying to know I can be competitive with some of the best and that on this occasion, I was fortunate enough to come out on top. Playing in handicapping tournaments and on the Tour has not only helped me hone my handicapping skills, but most importantly, has led to many friendships that I believe will last a lifetime.”

In past years Shurman and Nilsen were part of a 3-player expert panel that managed the Players’ Pool syndicate, a group wagering fund that would go after large Pick-6 carryovers.
