2-year old colt named after the late Jared Lorenzen

2-year old colt named after Jared Lorenzen“It’s the least we could do,” said Tracy Farmer. “I think a great deal of him — the hardship and what he had to overcome. I admire him greatly.”

The New York-bred 2-year-old colt sold for $205,000 at Saratoga’s 2018 yearlings sale and will be trained by Mark Casse, who also trained Sir Winston, winner of the 2019 Belmont Stakes.

Farmer, a Bluegrass native who has served on the University of Kentucky’s Board of Trustees and established UK’s Institute for Sustainability and the Environment with a $2 million gift in 2000, is also a UK football season ticket holder.

“You never know what kind of horses these are,” Farmer said. “You know how that is, but I go to all the football games and was a great fan of his. It’s just in honor of him.”

‘Lorenzen’, who is currently training in Ocala, Fla., will soon ship to Churchill Downs in Louisville to prepare for his racing debut. Ironically, Lorenzen made his first start as UK quarterback at Louisville in 2000.
