August 13th Edition

SARATOGA

CLEON JONES (Race 1 @SAR, July 28, 2019) – Expensive two year old in training purchase looked beat turning for home but unleashed a powerful late run (12.1) to not only get up but be drawing off impressively at the wire.  Tale Of The Cat 2yo could be a stakes runner for Englehardt.

FREAKY STYLEY (Race 1 @SAR, July 24, 2019) – Trainer Jorge Abreu had this firster ready to go in debut but he broke slowly (spotted 1 1/2 lengths to field) out of the gate.  Despite the tough 7 furlong distance he rallied well to finish 2nd to the winning Chad Brown horse.

IRISH MIAS (Race 6 @SAR, July 24, 2019) – 2yo son of Sky Mesa finished very well in debut and was the only threat to the gate-to-wire winning favorite.  This was on dirt, but his dam loved the turf and he is a half to a turf winner of over $90k.

ROMANTIC PURSUIT (Race 10 @SAR, July 28, 2019) – Maiden winner tracked the pace and took over turning for home.  In the final 1/8th she was super game to hold off several challengers.  Well-bred filly for Godolphin has a future.

SHENNAN (IRE) (Race 4 @SAR,  July 25, 2019) – Foreign invader for Mark Casse was likely compromised by the slow pace and heavy downpour conditions.  Given strong Euro form in Ireland, this well bred colt deserves another chance against similar.

PUTTHEGLASSDOWN (Race 8 @SAR, July 27, 2019) – PA bred son of Violence broke open the gate prior to the start. He finished very well in this 6 furlong 1x behind the speedy Jason Servis runner who helped set the pace.  Has run very well in all three Saratoga starts.

KEOTA (Race 1 @SAR, July 31, 2019) – This Lonhro filly was overbet off the claim by Jason Servis for Michael Dubb.  She stayed in after the race was taken off the turf but she despises the main track.  Look for her back on the grass in her second start for Servis.

MASCHA (FR) (Race 7 @SAR, July 31, 2019) – Margin of victory was deceptive as this Chad Brown import was much the best in this 1x entry level allowance.  Ran a close second to Homerique overseas and that one is a Grade 2 winner and Grade 1 placed for Brown in the States.

KLICKITAT (Race 10 @SAR, Aug. 1, 2019)- ran second to a stakes-placed turf runner in career debut, running a big 2yo fig, and finally got back on the grass her 10 months later.  Making first start for Jerkens, the 3yo just missed late to a logical winner that dropping in from open company.  Major contender next time out at same level.

SARATOGA

SHE’S A JULIE (Race 13 @SAR, July 21, 2019) – This honest filly from the Asmussen barn spotted weight to the top two finishers but held on well for third in this Grade 1 stakes.  She can dangerous next time in a better spot.

BLUE GEM (Race 1 @SAR, July 21, 2019) – 3yo looked really good winning first time off the claim for trainer Steve Asmussen, who dropped him from 30k to 16k.  Should be able to take a logical step up in class next time out.

OFF THE RECORD (Race 7 @SAR, July 17, 2019) – Firster took a lot of money and ran to it.  Son of Distorted Humor was very professional coming up the rail to win going away in this off-the-turf maiden special weights event.  Brisset barn doesn’t usually have them cranked up first time out.

MY SASSY SARAH (Race 10 scr @SAR, July 17, 2019) – Michelle Nevin firster was scratched when this race was taken off the turf.  She is a half to two nice turf winners, and the dam won on the grass as well.  Granddaughter of War Front should love the sod.

SHANCEALOT (Race 11 @SAR, July 28, 2019) – Juice.

LUCKY MOVE (Race 3 @SAR,  July 25, 2019) – Marshall Gramm’s Ten Strike Racing runner was claimed two back and then shipped to New York to take advantage of the lucrative state-bred program.  The mare rewarded this smart move with a powerful, off-the-pace victory in this 1x, optional $25k race.  Loves 9 furlongs and can be a threat at the next level.

DEL MAR

NOLDE (Race 8 @DMR, 7/17/2019) – Son of Pioneerof The Nile is a strong closer on the grass for trainer John Shireffs.  Sophomore colt just missed to favorite in the Oceanside Stakes on opening day.

ORIGINAIRE (IRE) (Race 7 @DMR 7/18/19) – Zoffany colt was squeezed back at the start of this race, but recovered under Mike Smith to unleash a big late run and score with something still left in the tank.   Impressive.

AQUEDUCT

DUBLINTHEPLEASURE (Race 6 @AQU 1/4/18) – New York bred rebounded off a poor race and finished well to just miss defeating former stakes winner Outplay, who was dropping sharply in class for new barn.  Spotted weight to that rival in a really good effort at this $16,000 claiming level.

TAMPA BAY DOWNS

MANCORA (Race 5 @TAM, 1/2/19) – this hopeless longshot finished strongly and hit the wire looking like a solid 2-1 favorite in this maiden $16,000 claimer.  However, in the process the Ice Box filly cut off another runner at the top of the lane and was subsequently DQ’d.  Given the level of this class, don’t know if this one can repeat this ‘winning’ maiden performance or not, but she was best in this field.

TURFWAY PARK

VALKYRIE (Race 7 @TP, 1/3/19) – first time starter took a commanding lead in the stretch over the two betting choices and was very green in the lane.  She waited on her competition as the odds-on choice battled and took the lead nearing the wire.  Awesome Again filly then came again late under Luan Machado to garner a better-than-it-looks victory.  Has talent.

AQUEDUCT

AMERICAN MANDATE (Race 5 @AQU, 12/15/18) – Steve Asmussen runner had the worst of it as he dueled throughout and then had to try to hold off the late runner of a fresh closer, who was coming  off a strong debut effort. Settled for second in an even-better-than-it looks performance.

TAMPA BAY DOWNS

WILD SCAT BLUE (Race 3 @TAM, 12/8/18) – this son of Scat Daddy dueled throughout in this race and then gave way to a sharp 3yo that had shipped in from Southern California for trainer Eion Harty.  Should be awfully tough back in at this same claiming level next time out at Tampa.

BELMONT PARK

KEPT TRUE (Race 9 @BEL 10/4/18) – First time starter by Yes It’s True was full of run and just waiting for run when she took over in mid-stretch and scored an easier-than-it-looks victory.  She’s out of a stakes placed mare and is bred to be a nice sprinter.

STRIVE FOR A CURE (Race 5 @BEL 9/19/18) – This was quite the put over by top MidAtlantic trainer Dale Capuano, who brought this 2yo son of Goldencents up from Laurel to upset a pretty good maiden field at odds of 10-1.  Ridden by bug boy Weston Hamilton, he made a long sustained run on the inside to catch the favorite in mid stretch and then outduel that one to the wire.

SUNNY RIDGE  (race 8 @BEL, 9/22/18) – Holy Bull gelding made a wide sweeping run against the early speed bias and finished a game 2nd to the logical, gate to wire winner. Jason Servis runner is very honest.

SARATOGA

OPRY (Race 9 @SAR 8/29/18) – This winner of the featured With Anticipation Stakes unleashed an eye-catching late run to get up and draw off at the wire. Son of Declaration Of War, who is by War Front, just missed in debut which was taken off the turf. That race was won by Cairo Cat.  2nd stakes winner out of that maiden affair on Aug. 11th.

ELLIS PARK

BORDINI (Race 7 @ELP, 8/5/18) – live runner from the Amoss barn raced inside of traffic and then got shuffled back to last behind not one but two walls of horses.  Swept to the far outside, which is not where you want to be at Ellis, and unleash a good late run for a sneaky good effort.

SARATOGA

OUR GIRL ABBY (Race 5 @SAR, 7/21/18) – made a wide move turning for home to engage the gate-to-wire winner in deep stretch. Exchanged bumps with that filly and lost the bob in a solid performance.  This was her first start since March and her first for her new barn, who raised her confidently in class.

PUTTHEGLASSDOWN (Race 5 @SAR, 7/21/18) – broke from the rail in her debut at the Spa for Englehart.   Settled in 8th before making a nice run to get up for the place spot behind the winning Asmussen favorite.  The PA-bred daughter of Violence is out of a stakes winning mare.

PICTURE DAY (Race 3 @SAR, 7/26/18) – Linda Rice runner loves to win and she was one of the few that closed against the bias in the slop on this Thursday afternoon.  A stakes winner, this Include mare is tough in the optional claiming sprints.

TRINNI NINJA (Race 10 @SAR, 7/27/18) – Daughter of Trinniberg was one of the few to close against the bias on this day.  She is in good form and might be able to break through for low percentage connections next time out at the state-bred maiden $25,000 (or lower) level.  Demand some value.

CATORIA (Race 5 @SAR 8/1/18) – Wildcat Heir filly outran other speed in this race and took this field gate to wire, beating the heavy favorite at 23-1 for Mike Dini.  She is out of a Meadowlake mare and will be dangerous at 6 1/2 or under.

BROCKMONINOFF (Race 3 @SAR 8/1/18) – George Weaver runner was bet down on the drop in class despite his first race since last October.  Suffered some trouble in this race and came up a little short.  Barn is only 12% off  layoffs and this NY bred should move forward next time out.  Can dirt or turf.

LIGHT THE POSSE (Race 2 @SAR 8/2/18) – Betting favorite was making his second career start off a good 2nd in debut and adding Lasix.  The son of Posse ended up hurt badly by a modest pace set by the eventual gate to wire winner.  Can score at this level next time out.

SARATOGA

MORRISON (Race 8 @SAR, 7/25/18) – 3yo is now two for two against state bred company on the lawn.  Joe Sharp runner upset a good field that included two veteran nine year olds.

TAYLER’S THE BOSS (Race 2 @SAR, 7/25/18) – 3yo daughter of Street Boss dropped into open company, facing two life, but was also facing a very strong favorite in the eventual wire-to-wire winner.   She chased that older filly around the track in a very good performance for trainer Steve Asmussen.

TURCO BRAVO (CHI) (Race 1 @SAR 7/20/18) – new runner in the low percentage Barrera barn ran a big race in the opening of the Saratoga meet.  He stumbled at the start and recovered to run a clear second to a drop-down winner.  Loves the Saratoga main track.

SHADY SHADY SHADY (Race 2 @SAR 7/20/18) – Finished well in this state-bred turf sprint behind the winning favorite from the Chad Brown barn.  Solid effort for a barn that is only 8% with debut runners.  She is out of a stakes placed Street Sense mare.

LYRICAL LADY (Race 5 @SAR 7/20/18) – $625,000 purchase for Phoenix Stable crushed his field first out for trainer Steve Asmussen.  Daughter of More Than Ready is out of stakes placed La Song and looks to have a bright future.
