Belmont Park

READY SIGNAL (race 8 at BEL, Sept. 18, Opt 2x, 1 mile turf).  This longshot had a real sneaky trip.  She broke last but after the opening quarter mile, she moved into contention along the rail. From there she never had clear sailing and was steadied on the backstretch.  She was full of run turning for home when again she had no room.  When she finally got clear, she finished willingly for the show spot.

Churchill

ONE MAN ONE VOTE (Race 5@CD, 6 furlongs, Maiden Claiming $10,000) The second choice had a bad start and drifted out immediately and was quickly at the back of the field. Was forced to go five wide in the turn and then made progress until he was blocked and forced to wait near the furlong marker. A fifth place finish that should have been much better.

Indiana Downs

BELLA GRAY (race 2 at IND, Sept. 16, 6 furlongs, maiden claimer).  Sporting blinkers for the first time, this filly got off to a tardy start from her outside post and was well behind the early leaders. She unleashed a devastating late kick to not only get second but get the bob on the wire for the improbable victory.

Monmouth

LONGING FOR QUIET (Race7@WO, September 14, 2013, 1 1/16 miles turf, Claiming $20,000) The second choice was forced out some at the start and then traveled along the inside and in contention. Was asked for run around the 3/8 pole and picked up the proceedings but was then blocked at the top of the stretch. Just when it looked like room would come open the mare was forced to steady near the furlong marker. She didn’t quit and secured fourth place after be compromised.

Suffolk

DADS SPITFIRE (Race 5@SUF, September 14, 2013, one mile, Maiden Claiming $5,000) The favorite was forced six wide in the first turn and then a similar fate into and down the backstretch. She was then fanned about five wide entering into the stretch and could not make progress after covering so much extra ground.

MORAVITZ (Race 8@SUF, September 14, 2013, 1 1/16 miles, MSW) The favorite hit the gate and was then squeezed back losing ground before the first turn. He went wide going into the back stretch to get position and entered contention in the far turn. He was behind the wall of the leaders coming into the stretch and was forced to swing out to have a chance. MORAVITZ managed to gain third after his eventful trip.

Woodbine

BEEZIE (Race 2@WO, September 11, 2013, 5 furlongs, Claiming $10,000 2L) Terrible start with apprentice on board hopelessly left at the gate. Was rushed hard to catch up and went widest in turn. When reaching the stretch the mare was still the widest but ran with determination and finished fifth in a blanket photo for the place position.

QUASAR POWER (Race 1@WO, September 15, 2013, 6 ½ furlongs, MSW, 2YO) A higher priced colt from the Ocala sales trained by Mark Casse and ridden by Patrick Husbands would normally mean a victory at Woodbine. The debut colt was a little slow to get out of the gate and Husbands made sure he was safe and let him stay at the rear. After keeping the colt out of harm’s way and not asking for run, it was easy to tell the balance of the race was being used for schooling. Husbands could have taken the inside route and followed the favorite entering the stretch but he moved outward to the center and introduced the youngster to a whip from the left side, and of course made sure he was safe at all times. Watch for this one.

DIG ALITTLE DEEPER (Race 9@WO, September 14, 2013, one mile turf, stakes) The sixth choice traveled along the rail without incident until midway in the turn when he was blocked and had to wait ,was taken down to the inside only soon to be blocked again. He then came out in the middle of the course and had to wait, but showed plenty of run when free to do so.
