At Del Mar
RICHARD’S KID (Race 11 at DMR, Aug. 26, 1 1/4 miles). Sneaky trouble trip in the G1 Pacific Classic for this classy runner. He stumbled briefly at the start which cost him early. Raced inside under his new rider (due to the barn switch to the Doug O’Neil barn) and steadied turning for home, as winner got jump on him. Rallied well to get up for third and was flying past the wire. This guy is a major player for the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
TIZ THE ROUTE (Race 8 at DMR, Aug. 22, 6 1/2 f, cl 16, 2 life). Boy, oh boy, was this layoff returnee well meant in her comeback race. The speedster had been working well leading up to the race, but unfortunately broke dead last in the large field of claimers. She spotted the field a good 3-4 lengths. Rushed up between horses to get into positing turning home. Proceeded to make a winning run down the lane when she bore out in the lane late, no doubt tiring from her earlier exploits. The daughter of Tiznow has not won in a long time, but she is sitting on a win for low profile barn.
At Saratoga
DEPARTURES (Race 2 at SAR, August 22, 5 1/2 turf). This very consistent turf sprinter was “up against it” going only 5 1/2 furlongs with a short field of quality speed types. Despite that he raced fairly evenly en route to a sneaky good performance. Look for a stretch back out to 6 furlongs or longer.
