Great Horse Racing Videos – Chrome in the 2016 Pacific Classic

“California Chrome in a canter!” ~ announcer Trevor Denman

Kentucky Derby champion California Chrome smashes to victory in the 2016 Pacific Classic, defeating a solid Grade 1 field that included the super mare Beholder and the talented runner Dortmund.

Later this year California Chrome will attempt to become the first 5-year-old Thoroughbred to add the Breeders’ Cup Classic to a resume that includes the Kentucky Derby.   Derby winners who won the Classic are: 3yos Unbridled, American Pharoah and Sunday Silence, and 4yos Ferdinand and Alysheba.  It’s a difficult task and rare for an older horse to accomplish, especially since few Derby winners get to compete at an advanced age.

Great Horse Racing Videos – A Star is Born?

Leading Santa Anita trainer Phil D’Amato unleashed a first time starter, the 3yo filly Enola Gray.   The performance was reminiscent of the great filly Melair, who won ‘ran them off their feet’ like this in California a few decades ago.

A Tribute to Shared Belief

The Great Horse Racing Video Series – R.I.P. Shared Belief

Shared Belief, one of the best horses of our generation, passed away due to complications with colic today, Dec. 3, 2015.

The following was posted by Jungle Racing (Jim Rome’s outfit):

“Thoroughbred racing is a sport filled with the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. Some of the most thrilling and surreal moments of our entire lives have occurred in this sport. Unfortunately, today we have suffered our most devastating. We have lost Shared Belief. He seemed to display signs of Colic this morning so our vets rushed in to treat him. They immediately sent him to UC Davis so he could get the best medical attention available, as quickly as possible. Emergency Colic surgery was performed, but doctors were unable to save him. We are still awaiting results of an autopsy. We are all absolutely devastated. Shared Belief was a once in a lifetime horse. A champion, fighter and unbelievable talent who impacted and changed all of our lives. The little horse that feared no one and could do anything. He absolutely loved his job and to compete and run. As heartbreaking as this is, we all consider ourselves so fortunate to have been a part of this amazing animal’s life. He was a super horse from day one. He would end up winning 10 of 12 starts, including 5 G1’s and an Eclipse Award. The Big Horse was a champion in every sense of the word. There will never be another like Shared Belief. Our hearts are broken. RIP, Champ.”

Great Horse Racing Video Series – 1997 Belmont Stakes

Are we store for this type of result on Saturday?  In the 1997 Belmont Stakes jockey Gary Stevens, one of the best of our generation, rode a less than stellar race aboard Triple Crown hopeful Silver Charm.  It began around the first turn when he lost tactical advantage along the inside, giving up that spot to eventual winner Touch Gold.  The 1997 Belmont Stakes featured a thrilling stretch run, called by Tom Durkin.
