Great Horse Racing Videos – Maxfield in a Clark Handicap Thriller

Grade 1 winner and Churchill Downs horse for the course Maxfield went out a winner in his final race, capturing the G1 Clark Handicap over Thanksgiving weekend.  Happy Saver, a 12-1 longshot, ran second after failing to switch leads during the entire stretch run.  That cost him the grade one victory.

New Bill Would Allow Online Bets for Horse Racing, Sports Betting Kiosks at New York Stadiums

We’re still a month or two away from the launch of New York online sports betting, but one New York legislator is already prepping to expand sports betting opportunities in the state.

Senator Joseph P. Addabbo Jr. filed a bill for the state’s upcoming legislative session in January to bring horse racing into the online sportsbook fold, a point of action he noted would be high on his list for the next state budget.

“If someone on one of our apps can bet on the Nets, Knicks, Rangers, whatever team they want, and also horse racing at Saratoga, it will give the New York consumer a better product. I think integrating horse racing into mobile betting will be a very high priority for me,” Addabbo PREVIOUSLY TOLD ESNY.

Senate Bill S7536 seeks to allow the nine qualified sports betting operators the ability to take horse racing bets on their mobile apps.

Additionally, the bill allows sports betting operators to partner with “select affiliates” to install self-service betting kiosks at their premises for customers.

If passed, the legislation would state sports bettors to place a fixed odds bet on a horse race through one of the nine online operators. The operator would have to partner and enter into an agreement with a horse racing content provider.

How new proposed rules would deter horse racing’s drug cheats

Trainer still furious about Maximum Security DQ in Kentucky Derby; Belmont Stakes next?Thoroughbred racing’s drug cheats would face stiffer sanctions, stronger deterrents and surprise testing if a set of proposed rules announced Thursday are adopted.

Negotiations between the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority and the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency have yet to yield a contract or put a price on streamlining the sport’s drug enforcement, but the rules released for public feedback anticipate a more vigorous, centralized and consistent model than the patchwork arrangement that currently exists among America’s 38 racing jurisdictions.

Positive tests involving prohibited substances would be subject to multiyear suspensions: two years for a first offense; up to four years in the event of aggravating circumstances or for a second violation within 10 years.

Therapeutic medications banned only on race day could trigger a 30-day suspension and up to a 2-year ban in the event of aggravating circumstances or a fourth violation within a five-year period.

Race-day violations would mean automatic disqualification for the horse.

These penalties are potentially more punitive than those currently imposed by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission. According to the KHRC’s guidelines, a first offense involving a Class C drug such as betamethasone calls for a suspension of no more than 10 days for the responsible trainer…

Horse Racing News from Pennsylvania

Horse Racing Integrity and Safety Act

The most significant regulatory change in horse racing oversight is making headway.

Rather than the patchwork regulating 38 racing statesincluding Pennsylvania, a uniform national standard is coming.

A draft of proposed anti-doping and medication rules is out and a comment period is open. Changes begin next July.

Key changes include:

  • The bans the anti-bleeding medication Lasix on race day in all 2-year-old and stakes races. Last week, all 14 Breeders’ Cup world championships ran without Lasix for the first time.
  • Primary substances are never allowed, including anabolic steroids and erythropoietin (EPO) that can increase red blood cells and boost aerobic capacity.
  • Secondary substances as anti-inflammatories and supplements cannot be used on race day.
  • Up to 48 hours before a race, Horses are allowed to ingest only water, hay and oats two days before a race.
  • There be no detection of any prohibited substance beginning at midnight on race day

The Key to Success with the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act

Lasix for horses

Lasix is legal and given to both horses and humans

By Barry Irwin [founder of Team Valor] — The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) is not scheduled to begin operations until July of next year, but with release of the initial guidelines issued for public consumption last week and any number of Op/Ed pieces appearing in industry trade publications, the direction of the Authority that will steer the ship seems to be given plenty of helpful hints for its future navigation.

As the one who got the ball rolling in a 2004 Op/Ed in The Blood-Horse by urging industry members to consider a way of hiring the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency to oversee drugs in horseracing, I must at this early juncture in the start-up of the Authority register my fears regarding the ultimate success of the new entity and its potentially sweeping changes.

Germination for wishing to get USADA involved in the struggle to rid cheaters from the game was to use CEO Travis Tygart and his team to devise a plan to form an investigative unit capable of discovering through traditional and new-wave policing methods which designer and human drugs were being used to tilt the playing field in North American racing.

If the world of international sport had learned one thing from the 2002 Bay Area Laboratory Co-operative (BALCO) it was that testing was best used not to apprehend suspects but to confirm that they were cheating. The gold standard in catching the crooks was by finding the actual illegal substances first, then developing a test and using that test in the future to nail the bad guys. Testing without knowing what one was testing for was like trying to find a needle in a haystack…
